students: meet governors

UAL Governors meeting studentsLast night I met some students with three of my fellow governors, Andrea, Diana and Sim.

As governors we felt that we didn’t fully understand the students perspective because we rarely get to meet them. So we organised an inform get together in the CSM bar. The students were great and told us lots about their experience of UAL, good and bad.

It was really valuable for us and we’ll definitely do it again. I’ll try and post more info here when I have it.

savage: beauty

McQueen Savage Beauty at the V&A

I saw the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the V&A the other day.

He was a CSM, UAL grad taught by the brilliant Louise Wilson. Which reminded me of the incredible heritage this university has.

I wrote more on my other blog.

lcc: digital design lunch

UAL: LCC digital design lunch

I popped to LCC today, where they had organised a small lunchtime thing for to see what they are doing in the School of Design. Fred Deakin and others were there together with some students. It’s good to have students at these things. Governors don’t get to meet students enough.

The School of Design are doing lots of good stuff and there’s more planned. There’s a new course in Information and Interface Design which Ben Stopher described well. Good to hear it moves beyond teaching students to design web pages and instead teaches the principles of interaction and how to work with code as a material. “Traditional design acumen with an understanding of modern technology”, was the phrase used.

Students and staff expressed a frustration at how industry changes quicker than the college can adapt.  We discussed ways to make that easier and more flexible.

Students expressed frustration with the digital tools they’re given, Moodle etc. I’ve heard that before.

An interesting session.

visiting: collabology

UAL Collabology students

I visited Collabology last week. Collabology is an experiment at bringing together students from different colleges (not just UAL) and different locations to work on realistic briefs. Organised by Fred Deakin UAL Chair of Interactive Digital Art.

There’s a pitch style presentation at the end of the week long course which I sadly couldn’t make but some of the students talked me through their work.

There was a low-fi set up that gave the place a start up style atmosphere and energy. I particularly liked the use of Skype to do crits mid week. There was an interesting mix of analogue and digital tools. Moving past digital infatuation and analogue nostalgia as we used to say at Newspaper Club.

Very interesting and great to see people experimenting like this. One to watch.

coffee: matt ward

Matt Ward

Matt is a friend, he’s also in charge of all Design at Goldsmiths. We met for coffee the other day and discussed design, universities and digital. I have this conversation a lot and I often ask who’s good at that stuff?

The same names crop up, for different reasons: Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, CalArts, MIT, ArtCenter, Ecal, Ravensbourne and Goldsmiths.

understanding: the internet

Three good speeches from the last six months.

Mike Bracken to the policy profession – you need to understand the Internet better.

Emily Bell to journalists – you need to understand the Internet better.

Martha Lane Fox to everyone – you need to understand the Internet better.

I wonder what the education version would say. I wonder who woud make it.

coffee: david white

UAL LCF Holborn

I had coffee the other day with David White. He’s Head of Technology Enhanced Learning at UAL.

We met in the cafe part of the UAL / LCF Holborn site, pictured above. Everyone I’ve met at UAL I’ve insisted on meeting at a UAL site and having coffee inside. This has been met with some surprise “there are nicer places over the road” but I want to visit as many sites as possible and this seems a good way to do it.

creativity: business

UAL: LCF Fashion Business school launch
Last night I went to launch of the UAL LCF Fashion Business School. I only took one picture and that was the view from the venue.

I’ve always advocated designers should learn about business, particularly how to run one, as most designers end up doing that.

Who’s your favourite designer? I bet they run their own business.

The Business School is a great idea. You can find out more about it here.

dummies: in the lift

I popped into UAL HQ in Holborn this week. I met these people in the lift. They were on their way to an event at CSM on Sunday. Sadly, I can’t remember which one but there’s a list here.
